If you’ve ever had to deal with a creeping charlie weed infestation on your lawn, you would understand the frustration I went through before discovering the right herbicide for controlling this weed.

Belonging to the ivy family, the creeping charlie is regarded as a weed because of its invasive nature.

It has a well-developed root system that makes it difficult to be easily pulled out, hence herbicides are relied on to dry up creeping charlie from its roots.

Talking about herbicides, the dicamba herbicide is scientifically proven to contain elements effective enough to eradicate the creeping charlie weed.

This chemical popularly used as a herbicide contains dichloro and methoxy benzoic molecules that combine to make the chemical an effective one for weeds.

Dicamba herbicide is soluble in water and ethanol. It is useful for killing weeds but can kill useful plants if not handled correctly.

The dicamba herbicide is labeled harmful and a pollutant because of its nature of flowing from the garden where it is applied, to neighboring gardens and water bodies, causing death to plants and destroying aquatic lives.

Because of the danger, it poses to plants, there had to be the development of dicamba-resistant plants.

An introduction of the dicamba-resistant plants led to an increased usage of dicamba for weed control. The effect of this is the fact that weeds also began to grow some form of resistance to the herbicide.

Today, various dicamba-based herbicides have been manufactured for the control of weeds like the creeping charlie. These herbicides vary significantly in their action on the weed and the methods of application.

In this article, I take it upon myself to research the dicamba herbicide best suited for eliminating creeping charlie from your garden and lawns.

    Will Dicamba Kill Creeping Charlie?

Yes, dicamba herbicide will kill creeping charlie.

Asides from creeping charlie, a dicamba herbicide will kill a wide range of weeds that attack your garden. This is because the dicamba herbicide is made of chlorine and chlorine never reacts well with plant cells.

On getting to the leaf of the pests, it dries it up and kills the entire weed connectivity. At the death of the weed, it dries up and can be easily pulled out of the soil.

For creeping charlie, after the dicamba herbicide acts on it and kills it, the well-tangled root system comes off and can be easily pulled with hands.

What is the Best Herbicide for Creeping Charlie

I recommend the eight best dicamba herbicides for handling your creeping charlie issues.

These herbicides are all prepared by different manufacturing companies, using the same dicamba chemical compounds.

Although there are few variations to these dicamba herbicides, they all do the same action of causing abnormal growth in plants before they eventually die off. They act like auxins and kill the plant leaves first before spreading to the root system.

Below is a list of dicamba herbicides that are best suited for eliminating creeping charlie.

    1. Gordon’s speed zone weed killer
    1. PBI Q4 plus Herbicide
    1. Select Source Triad QC. 3-way herbicide with Quinclorac Controls
    1. Tenacity Turf herbicide, 8 ounces.
    1. Southern AG weed herbicide
    1. Trimec classic broadleaf herbicide
    1. Chickweed, Clover and oxalis herbicide
    1. Monterey LG 5600 spurge power herbicide

The following are classified as the best dicamba chemical herbicide for the control of creeping charlie on your lawn, garden, and even indoor plants.

My reasons for such classification are encumbered in the explanation below.

If you have your garden being invaded by creeping charlie weeds, perhaps one herbicide out of these nine listed above, can help you control and eliminate them.

    1. Gordon’s Speed Zone Weed Killer

This creeping charlie dicamba improved herbicide contains dicamba and other weed-killing elements like mecoprop acid.

The dicamba included in this herbicide makes it very effective for the control of creeping charlie. No creeping charlie weed can escape a spray of this herbicide on their broad leaves.

It is most appropriate for spraying on newly growing weeds. This is to stop the weed from reproducing too much before it is eliminated.

By applying on newly growing weeds, you relieve yourself of the stress of controlling too many creeping charlie weeds.

When the weeds dry up and die, the next step is to remove every trace of them from the garden or lawn to prevent new germination when the rains come. You should know that creeping charlie is a very stubborn weed.

    1. PBI Q4 Plus Herbicide

This herbicide is adapted to kill well-grown creeping charlie weeds. It kills it both at its emerging stage and after complete emergence.

The PBI Q4 plus herbicide does not just target the creeping charlie weed on the lawn. It attacks every other grassy weed and broadleaf weed.

Therefore, a can of this herbicide can help your garden stay clear of different kinds of weeds for a longer time.

    1. Select Source Triad QC, 3-way Herbicide With Quinclorac Controls

This herbicide is preferred among other dicamba herbicides because of its features.

It contains three active weed-killing ingredients that can kill every kind of stubborn weed like creeping charlie. It is also not harmful to plants and can be used on lawns and turfs.

The application of this herbicide to your lawn or turf will play a significant role in ridding your lawn of creeping charlie, crap grass, ground ivy, etc.

    1. Tenacity Turf Herbicide, 8 Ounces

This is ranked by gardeners and users as an easy-to-use effective herbicide. Its activity on creeping charlie and other weeds can be described as wonder.

The tenacity turf herbicide works both for the pre-emergent and post-emergent stages of the weeds. The chemical component in this weed killer is absorbed by weeds through their roots and distributed to every cell in the weed.

This causes a drying up of the weed, making them easy to pull out from the soil.

    1. Southern AG Weed Herbicide

This herbicide is recommended for use in pastures, rangeland, golf courses, and cemeteries where flowers are grown.

The application of this herbicide requires the usage of a larger amount on a smaller acre of land. If you can, ensure to have a spray emphasis on the weeds rather than useful plants on the lawn.

    1. Trimec Classic Broadleaf Herbicide

This dicamba herbicide for control of creeping charlie is rated as a five-star weed-killing agent. It has no odor and is environmentally friendly. It works on a wide range of weeds and is approved for a variety of weed control.

    1. Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Herbicide

This herbicide is carefully designed to kill different broadleaf weed species including creeping charlie.

It begins activity on the weeds hours after application. It is safe to be applied on lawns as it targets just the unwanted weeds like creeping charlie and other dicamba hating weeds.

The chickweed clover and oxalis herbicide is resistant to rainfall. This means that it cannot be washed off by rainfall, therefore you can apply this herbicide at any season of the year.

The effect is dissipated by mowing, hence I advise that the lawn should not be mowed a week before and after application.

    1. Monterey LG 5600 Spurge Power Herbicide

The dicamba in this herbicide functions as a post-emergent creeping charlie killer. It is best to apply the Monterey LG 5600 spurge power herbicide just after the creeping charlie has sprouted and developed a good number of leaves on it.

The chemical is ingested through the stomatal opening in the leaves and transported to different parts of the plant which eventually leads to its death.

What Kills Creeping Charlie and Not Grass

    Dicamba.

Every herbicide that is made of dicamba can kill creeping charlie weed and not harm grasses on the lawn.

You should apply the dicamba herbicide on your lawn growing creeping charlie weeds, from April to June. This way, the plant is killed before the first rains come to offer them some form of succor.

Even though a herbicide brand contains dicamba, it is usually safer to refer to the manufacturer’s manual that states how to use the chemical. This helps you know if the herbicide has some other elements apart from dicamba and how best to apply them to the lawn.

    Does T-Zone Kill Creeping Charlie?

The T-zone herbicide is specially prepared for stubborn grasses like the creeping charlie. So yes, T-zone does kill creeping charlie weeds. It not only kills creeping charlie but is effective for suppressing the sprout of nutsedge weeds.

    Useful Information

In this article, we have clearly outlined the best dicamba-based herbicides for creeping charlie extermination on lawns and gardens, and virtually anywhere they are seen as an encumbrance. The following information needs to be reemphasized:

    1. Dicamba is soluble in water and ethanol
    1. Ensure to remove every form of creeping charlie from the soil after it is killed by any dicamba-based herbicide.
    1. The best herbicides for the control and eradication of creeping charlie weeds have a dicamba base.
    1. Herbicides with a dicamba base are effective for controlling other weeds apart from the creeping charlie.
    1. T-zone needs to be dissolved in water and sprinkled directly on the lawn to be efficient.
    1. Careful understanding of the manufacturer’s guidelines for the usage of each of the above-listed chemicals is advised for optimum effect.

    Conclusion

Any Herbicide that contains dicamba is adequate for creeping Charlie control.

Dicamba is useful in that it does not harm other grasses but rather targets only weeds. I have listed eight herbicides you can consider purchasing to control creeping charlie in your lawn.
