One of the most attractive things about roses is that they have a sweet-smelling fragrance, that is why most people and even animals love roses.

Did you know that using coffee grounds for Roses is a great way to produce beautiful flowers? This is because coffee grounds contain some acidic properties that roses love. After all, roses thrive in neutral to acidic soils.

Coffee Grounds are rich in essential nutrients such as calcium,  nitrogen, iron, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium which is what most plants like roses need to thrive.

The coffee Grounds help to absorb heavy metals that contaminate the soil and attract worms and microbes which increases aeration in the soil and improves soil fertility.

Are Coffee Grounds Good For Roses?

Roses need three main nutrients; potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen grow and coffee Grounds are rich in these nutrients and many more.

Since roses require neutral to slightly acidic soil conditions to grow, it is only proper to use coffee Grounds on roses; they are not only easy to use but also cheaper than purchasing fertilizer.

How To Use Coffee Grounds On Roses

Applying coffee Grounds on roses can be done in several ways depending on the atmosphere and type of soil. A few are discussed below.

    1. Coffee Grounds Solution

Making coffee Grounds solutions is one way in which you can apply coffee grounds to your roses.

To do this, mix 500 grams of coffee grounds with two gallons of water and make sure your solution dissolves all coffee grounds. Water the roses with this solution and make sure they are evenly distributed.

This ensures that the solution infiltrates the soil quickly and reduces the effects of excess nitrogen in the soil which could burn the roots of roses.

    2. Pour Coffee Grounds Directly On Roses

This can be done by sprinkling 500 grams or half a pound of coffee grounds directly on the roses. After this is carried out, sprinkle the roses with two gallons of water to enable the coffee grounds to penetrate the soil and supply nitrogen to it.

Take caution though as these methods can burn the roots and hurt the plant eventually.

    3. Prepare Coffee Compost

Adding coffee grounds with compost is beneficial to roses because it helps to neutralise acidity In the soil and increases nutrient levels.

To make the coffee compost, mix compost with coffee grounds and add dry leaves and fresh grass to balance the compost heap.

Apply a coating of coffee compost to the roses at about 2 inches depth.  Avoid adding compost to the stem of roses because it will cause the stem to rot.

Coffee compost should be applied at the start of spring, the coffee compost will allow water to infiltrate the soil, improve aeration and prevent weeds from growing around the soil area.

    4. Mix Coffee With Wood Ash

Wood ash is high in carbon content, therefore mixing wood ash and the coffee ground will maintain a balanced carbon-nitrogen content.

To prepare the coffee ground with wood ash simply mix 300grams of coffee and 100 grams of wood ash and pour directly on the soil and water after.

Note that the method of adding coffee grounds to your roses depends on the type of rose and the environment they are found in.

Benefits Of Coffee Ground On Roses

Some important benefits of coffee grounds are highlighted below.

    • Roses love when organic materials are added to their soil. This helps to improve the soil structure and feed in the soils ecosystem which comprises worms and microbes that help break down the nutrients in the soil.
    •  Coffee grounds are beneficial to your compost heap because it decomposes very fast and add useful nutrients to the soil.
    •  They help to get rid of fungal and prevent them from forming in the soil.
    • Coffee grounds get rid of insects that attack roses. They have a substance known as caffeine that repels insects away because of their toxicity. Pests such as mosquitoes cannot survive in Soil that has coffee grounds.
    • Some pests like cats that are messy love to dig up soil and dirt in search of food will not be able to attack rose plants that have coffee grounds.
    •  Contains the best nutrients that are needed for rises to grow which are phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium.
    •  Worms leave tunnels and holes in the soil that allow the root to go deeper in the soil which helps the plant maintain strength, gives access to moisture and more nutrients that makes the rose healthy and drought resistant.

    Do Coffee Grounds Have Risks?

When coffee grounds are used often or applied in excess they can pose a threat to either the soil. What are those threats?

    1. Excess coffee grounds can kill the worms instead of persuading the worms to feed on them.
    2.  Excess intake of coffee grounds will kill the roots of roses, this is because they obtain a high level of nitrogen in them.
    3.  They can also lead to root rot of Roses.
    4. Excess coffee grounds can burn the rose petals and kill the stems.
    5. An increase in acidity of the soil will disrupt the pH of the soil.
    6. Excess caffeine can lead to the death of plants.
    7.  High levels of Nitrogen can cause the roses to have stunted growth.

How Often To Use The Coffee Ground On Roses

Coffee Grounds should be used on roses twice a month, this ensures that the roses utilize the nutrients gotten from the coffee Grounds adequately.

However, in much colder climates, the coffee Grounds should be applied once a month.

Take caution though not to Pour excess coffee grounds in your roses. If there is too much fertilizer in the roses the plant might end up dying instead of thriving.
