    Herbs are parts of plants that are processed and used in cooking and other industrial activities.  They are usually herbaceous flowering plants with seed-bearing non-woody stems. Herbs are parts of plants that are cultivated for their desired substances.

     Herb With Purple Flowers 

    A lot of herbs contain different flowers with different contrasting colours, but in this article today,  we are going to discuss only herbs that have purple flowers and how they are used.

    1. Chives

    Chives are perennial herbs that belong to the onion genus, they are a species of flowering plants which have long thin hollow leaves and bright purple colours. Chives are native to some parts of Asia, Europe, and North America. Chives are most often mistaken to be onions and form dense clusters from their roots.

     Growth Requirements Of Chives

    Chives require little to no effort when growing and they are maintained easily. The necessities they need are:

    • Full morning sun or bright environment  to partial shade
    • Proper watering at the right time and weather conditions
    •  Proper soil drainage with the right amount of fertilizer 

    Uses of Chives 

    1. They are used as flavour enhancers because of their mild onion taste.
    2. They are planted on hills and rock gardens to help control erosion.
    3. Their flowers are used to add flavours to drinks
    4. Chives contain certain compounds like cholate that are associated with improving memory and preventing dementia.

    2.  Tulip

    Tulips originate from South Europe and some parts of Asia.

    Tulips are perennial herbs plants with bright coloured flowers ranging from red, yellow, purple, orange, pink, etc

    Growth Requirements 

    1. Tulips dislike excess moisture, so ensure that they are planted in dry fertile soil
    2. Soil has to be well-draining to prevent root rot
    3.  They need full sun to grow well
    4. Tall Tulips should be placed in places free from strong winds.

    Uses Of Tulips 

    • Tulips often represent love so they are given as gifts to loved ones 
    • Their flowers are edible
    • They can be processed and used as flavours or perfumes 
    • They help soothe pain, headaches and cold.

    3. Peony

    Peonies are flowering herb plants that are from the genus peony. Peonies are native to Asia, Europe, and Western North America. They have over 30 different species with big different brightly coloured flowers ranging from pink, yellow, orange, purple, white, blue, etc.

    Growth Requirements Of Peony 

    • Moat Peonies are shade tolerant but they will prefer to be placed outside 
    • Peonies should not be planted too deeply to allow them to produce flowers.
    • Like all other flowering plants, Peonies should be in good draining soil.
    • Soil should be rich in compost and manure. Fertilizers can also be added when needed.

    Uses of Peonies

    1. Their petals are boiled and used as a tea
    2. Roots of Peonies are used as an anti-inflammatory. 
    3. They are often used by Chinese herbalists to cure muscle cramps, menstrual pains, hypertension etc.
    4.  It prevents blood coagulation and helps improve blood flow.
    5. They are used as ornaments in homes and gardens.
    6.  They Act as antioxidants.

    4. Rosemary 

    Another purple flowering herb is Rosemary. It is a plant that is a native of the Mediterranean and grown in some parts of southern Europe.

    They are known as drought-resistant crops and can survive in a hardy environment. Apart from purple they also come in different colours like blue and pink.

    Rosemary plants grow well in

    • Well-drained soils and fertile land
    • Rosemary blooms from spring to summer periods 
    • They also thrive well in full sun exposure. 

     Uses of Rosemary 

    1. Help improve memory for old people 
    2. Prevents ageing of brain and memory loss
    3. Used as spice and flavourings in foods
    4. Rich in antioxidants 
    5. Can be prepared as a tea
    6. Used to treat sunburns and swelling on the skin.

    5. Creeping Thyme

    Popularly known as Mother of all thyme, is a herbaceous flowering plant from the mint family.  It is called Creeping because this herb plant is low-growing and covers the ground.

    As a native of the Mediterranean,  these shrub plants consist of green leaves and wood base; their flowering plants are often purple in colours but sometimes can bear pink flowers.

    Growth Requirements Of Creeping Thyme 

    • Full sun or partial shade.
    • Good soil drainage is rich in compost and manure.
    • Good watering at an appropriate time.

    Uses of Thyme 

    1. Used widely as a spice  in cooking foods
    2. Enhances aroma in foods and delicacies 
    3. It helps prevent cancer
    4. Flowers are used as ornaments in homes.

    6.  Echinacea 

    The Echinacea is a herbal flowering plant from the genus daisy, also known as coneflower; this perennial plant blooms from summer to fall. If the right growing conditions are met they can grow up to 4ft. Their purple flowers have the resemblance of the yellow sunflower.

    For Echinacea to grow and thrive abundantly they must be kept under the right conditions such as:

    • Proper spacing, to enable flowers to grow properly. 
    • They need full sunlight for 4 hours, they can also tolerate partial shade.
    •  The soil must be fertile to allow good water drainage. 

    Uses of Echinacea 

    1. Helps to reduce high blood sugar levels
    2. Helps to reduce anxiety and hypertension 
    3. Improves the body’s immunity by fighting infections 
    4. Reduces the effect of common cold, flu, cough and fever.

    7. Christmas Basil

    The Christmas Basil is one of the numerous flowering herbaceous purple flowers in the Basil family. This herb originates from Thai and can thrive if grown properly with big purple flowers. 

    For Basil plants to look healthy, they should be properly spaced,  have an adequate amount of sun and watering etc.

    Uses of Christmas Basil 

    1. They are used widely for cooking
    2. Stomach upset
    3.  Intestinal gas, 
    4. Kidney conditions
    5.  Colds and flu
    6. Worm infections.
    7.  It is also used to treat snake and insect bites.

    8.  Lavender 

    Lavender are herbaceous plants that have an affinity for the sun, these purple flowering plants are drought-resistant plants, because of their native origin which is in Mediterranean regions such as France, Spain, Europe, and Eastern Africa, they usually thrive in sand and grit.

    And although we do not have to live in the Mediterranean to grow these plants right, we must meet the conditions they need to survive. Which are:

    • Sun: 6 hours of direct sunlight, most lavenders will not grow well in shade.
    • Avoid using excess fertilizer 
    • Watering if plants only when needed to prevent root rot

    1. Often used as a symbol of royalty 
    2. It’s used as a fragrance in most perfumes and beauty products.
    3. Production of essential oil that has  anti-inflammatory components 
    4. Lavender essential oil aids improve hair growth.
    5. Helps to alleviate menstrual pain.
    6. Reduces pain and swelling in the body
    7. Improves blood flow and circulation.
    8. Lavender flowers are used for cooking when dried.
    9. It’s used with wine, salads and cocktails as flavourings.

    9. Wild Indigo 

    The wild indigo is a herb found in the grasslands of North America and eastern North America. The herb can grow as high as 16 inches with the base being woody and the flowers having a colour between purple and blue.

    • It helps boos6 the immune system to prevent diseases
    • Used as a general purple  and blue dye 
    • Helps improve oral health and hygiene 
    • The roots are used to treat infections caused by cold
    • It is used to treat mosquito bites

    10.Cinnamon 

    As a part of the basil family, the cinnamon variant is also called the Mexican spice basil. The cinnamon herbaceous flower is purple in colours, it has a  methyl cinnamate taste very similar to that of cinnamon which is why it is given the name. The flowers range in colour from pink to purple with the leaves being dark-green.

    2. It is used as a major ingredient in the baking industry
    3.  Added as flavour in drinks, pasta and salads. 

    11.Sage 

    As a part of the mint family, this sage is a perennial herb plant that is greyish-green in colour, has purple flowers and is an evergreen shrub. This aromatic plant is used for cooking and also in making tea.

    All sage plants require full sun to partial shade to grow properly, they also need the right amount of watering and good soil drainage.

    12. Peppermint

    The herb peppermint, a natural flowering plant grows throughout Europe and North America.  Peppermint blooms flowers that are used to make essential oils, these oils are very concentrated and contain substances that give a plant its flavour.

    1. Both peppermint leaves and the essential oil from peppermint have been used for health purposes. 
    2. Peppermint  herb is a common flavouring agent in foods and beverages, and
    3.  peppermint oil is used as a fragrance in soaps and cosmetics.
    4. Peppermint has been used for  oral health purposes
    5.   it is used for digestive disorders.

    13.  Oregano 

     Another purple-flowered herb in the mint family, oregano is both a beautiful and useful plant in the garden and the home.

    It’s a herb native to the Mediterranean region but is also found in the temperate west and south parts of Europe.

    1. Added to flavour foods such as pizza, meats, fish and pasta.
    2. Used as a fragrance 
    3. Used in foods as they add nutritional value to it.
    4. Improves bone structure and formation.
    5. Slows and prevents cancer cells from spreading 
    6. Improves oral health.

    14. Catnip 

    Also known as catmint, the catnip herb is a minty plant that is native to China, the Middle East, and Southern Europe. It can grow to 100 cm in height and is perennial. You can quickly identify catnip plants with their purple flowers and square stems with leaves that are green in colour and triangular in shape.

    •  It contains antiseptic elements that are used in bathing, cleaning wounds and hair.
    • Reduces menstrual cramps and pain.
    •  Allow foods to digest properly 

    15. Spearmint 

    Spearmint is also called common mint, is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant that gives purple flowers when it blossoms. It’s a native of Africa, Europe, and Asia.

    The herb is can grow up to 100 cm. Its flowers are found on slender spikes with a light purple colour.

    1. It is used as an antioxidant because it contains vitamins.
    2. It is used to soothe muscle cramps, toothaches and headaches. 
    3. Used by companies to produce oral health products. 
    4. Used as herbs in making tea
    5. Added to salads and various foods.
