Peas are quite easy to grow plus they’re delicious and healthy.

Some peas have edible pods and some don’t but it doesn’t take away from the fact that you can enjoy eating them in different ways.

Read on to find out how deep to plant peas in your garden and what these veggies need to thrive.

Peas are one of the legumes gardeners love to handle because they require little care. They are of 3 types: sweet peas, snow peas and snap peas.

In this post, we will be discussing:

    • how peas are planted
    • the correct depth peas should be planted in the soil and
    • the possibility of planting peas too deep and the results

How Many Pea Seeds Should You Plant In Each Hole?

First of all, peas need to be planted in full sun and soil that drains well and they don’t require a lot of fertilizer so just compost is usually sufficient.

When the soil is ready, it is time to plant. The night before planting, peas should be soaked in water to soften their coats.

On the day of planting, dig holes for sowing in. Each hole should contain at least 2 pea seeds and up to 4 seeds per hole are normal.

If you sow only one seed, it may not germinate because peas have an average probability of germinating. Planting more than one seed in a hole also increases the possibility of more pea plants arising from that particular spot.

You may or may not move them if this happens, instead, you can guide their growth by placing a stake nearby. With time, they will fit into their surroundings and flourish.

How Deep Should Soil For Planting Peas Be?

Apart from being rich and draining well, the soil peas are planted in should have a particular depth. Peas will grow well in the soil as shallow as 30cm but for the best crop, 45cm is the standard depth.

Before planting peas, the soil should be properly cultivated. If there’s a need for amendment with compost, that should be done and the soil should be loosened up to 25cm by tilling.

Remember that fertilizer is not a necessity and should be used sparingly. If the soil is suitably readied before planting peas, they will have fewer problems growing and producing.

How Deep Should You Plant Pea Seeds In Your Garden?

We are about to explain how deep to plant peas in your garden because it is very important. Peas should be planted 2.5cm below the soil surface.

You can choose to plant peas in containers or garden soil. If you use containers, a 5-gallon one would do and if you plant in the garden, the bed should be at least 45cm deep.

2.5cm is the standard depth for planting peas but if you choose to plant deeper, do not exceed 5cm because then the peas will struggle to sprout.

When you plant peas at the correct depth, they will grow effortlessly and reward your efforts with a good harvest.

Is It Possible To Plant Peas Too Deep?

Planting peas too deep is possible. The best depth to sow peas at is 2.5cm and it should not go beyond 5cm if not there will be problems.

Most times, peas planted more than 5cm do not germinate at all because peas do not have a 100% germination rate even when planted right. The few times they manage to sprout, they do so poorly and suffer from stunted growth.

Stunted growth of the peas planted in such circumstances is so because the plant uses all of its resources to emerge from the soil instead of producing pods.

Should You Cover Peas with Soil?

You should cover peas with soil if you have planted them to eat later. The majority of edible pea varieties will require soil coverage to germinate.

How deep to plant peas in your garden? Peas will need a 2.5cm layer of soil to cover them so that they can sprout.

This layer should measure 5cm at most or else, the whole purpose of planting will be defeated. Secondly, peas that are simply thrown on top of the soil can be eaten by birds and other wildlife.

Covering peas with soil protects them from being scavenged and provides a suitable environment for them to grow well. Two or more pea seeds should be planted in every hole, 2.5cm below the topsoil.

Can You Plant Peas on The Soil Surface?

Only a few types of peas can be planted on the soil surface without needing to be covered. Field peas are one of these and these are not edible.

If you want to harvest peas you can eat, you will have to plant edible ones which must be covered with soil.

Planting field peas is of benefit because when they are planted in winter, they make the soil nutrients increase in time for spring planting.

To sow field peas, simply scatter them on the surface of the soil in more quantities than you’ll need. This is because some will fail to grow.

It is important to harvest peas at the right time. They get overripe quickly and become inedible.

Once pods with peas begin to develop, check them daily. If you think the pods are ready, pick one and eat. The skin must be thin and tender and it should taste sweet.

    FAQ

How many peas does it take to grow in one hole?

    two peas

What month do you plant peas?

It’s crucial to plant them in the springtime early enough for them to mature while the temperature is still cool. (This refers to planting in most of the United States and Canada in February, March, or April.) In warmer areas, they can also be cultivated as an autumn or winter crop.

How many peas do you get from one plant?

The Australian Vegetable Garden by Clive Blazey states that a single pea plant will provide 2 to 4 ounces (57 to 114 grams) of peas. This is roughly equivalent to 30 pods per plant.

    Do peas need fertilizer?

When grown in soil, peas often require little to no fertilizer. A small amount of fertilizer for fruiting plants, such as 5-10-10, may be applied early on to plants growing in containers.

Do you soak peas before planting?

Some Pisum sativum (pea) seeds will have wrinkled appearances. Since the majority of them have tough coats, soaking them altogether before planting is beneficial. Put them in warm water overnight to soak. Germination will proceed more quickly as a result.

Do peas need a lot of water?

A moderate amount of water is required by peas to grow and produce healthy pea pods. Peas hardly ever require more than one watering each week, but they do need a consistent moisture level all during the growing season.

    Do peas need a trellis?

Green peas don’t require a trellis, although vines grown upright will make it simpler to harvest pods. Before you start planting, install the trellis if you’re using one. Use netting, poles, and thread, a chicken wire-covered wood frame trellis, metal fence, or a cluster of gnarled branches driven into the ground to create a barrier between the plants.

Do peas grow back every year?

Sweet peas are an annual that blooms in the summer. They must be regrown every year because they germinate, grow, blossom, set seed, and die all in the same year. Sweet peas have lengthy blooming periods and offer months of color, fragrance, and flower picking.

Do you leave pea roots in the ground?

The plant may be chopped down at ground level if it is free of pest insects and/or diseases. Leave the roots where they are. Like other legumes, peas fix atmospheric nitrogen and store it in their roots. Keeping the roots in the soil will preserve that priceless fertilizer, keeping it accessible for the following crop.

Can you grow peas in a 5 gallon bucket?

    yes they can
Peas are one of the few crops that can be planted in the early spring and thrive in a container setting, even if they are not the only crop you can grow using this technique.

    Final Remarks

Peas are easy to grow but they have a limited planting period. Plant them early in spring so that they can mature while the weather is still cool.

In this article about how deep to plant peas in your garden, we have described the way peas are planted and the correct depth in which to plant them.

    • To summarize, peas planted to consume them later must be covered with soil measuring 2.5cm.
    • At most, it should be a 5cm layer of the earth if not, there is a chance that the peas will not grow or will be stunted.
    • Field peas can be broadcast on the soil surface but these cannot be eaten instead they nourish the soil and make it rich for next season planting.
    • To harvest plenty of peas, till the soil before planting, plant them at the correct depth, give enough water, keep the garden free of weeds and watch out for pests.

Have you ever tried deep plannting peas before? how did it turn out? tell us in the comments!
